Locked out my only hope is to cut the screen and climb in. I walked quickly with a striding purpose to the garage to get a sharp knife and a step stool to get back into the house. Looking at the sky I see the haze has
disappeared and the stars are twinkling in all their bright glory.
Through the damp grass at 12:30 am I get what I need and go back to my bedroom window. Note to self, tell mom to get a less heavy step stool.
At the edge of the grass I heave over the step stool to my bedroom window. Promptly the
stool sinks into the dark freshly watered dirt and sinks in at least six inches. I step up to the step stool and my feet sink up to my ankles. My flip flops sink and I can not get them out.
Mumbling some sort of unkind talk under my breath I realize I can not reach the window enough to climb in. Dang! So I haul the stool back to the garage, sliding my feet in the damp grass hoping to rid them of the sticky black mud. At some time I must have wiped the mud on my face, what a sight.
Inside the garage I realize the ladder is behind the old Queen size mattress and box springs. Okay I've come this far, I can get it. Sweating now, mixing with the mud on my face. I finally get the ladder free and swoosh it clangs into my shins. Half dragging, half carrying
in to the front yard I suddenly realize that if the neighbor sees me he'll probably call the police.
Still, the clanging metal ladder get to the window. I know it will sink into the mud but it is big enough to get me inside. Gingerly but with much noise I secure the ladder in and climb up to reach the window. Using the knife I cut a
triangle shape and slip it back. There is Leo wagging his tail at me and barking his happy bark.
Okay here I go, breaking into moms house late at night Suddenly a glaring light comes on next door. Not Annie that has the spare key but the other neighbor next door. Laughter
springs up in me and rings eerily in the crisp night air. I can't help it, I giggle and giggle. Now my silly tears mix with the mud and sweat dripping down my face.
On the inside of the room is my small bed and a night stand, so how am I going to get in? Head first I start to inch in as the ladder tips over with a loud bang. I partly crawl over the window sill. Did I forget to tell the world that my moms beautiful house is a light and airy with white walls and white carpet and colorful accents, always looking so clean, her pride and joy.
Slowly I get one knee on the window sill and let a sigh of relief out. I get my leg in and feel a sharp sting in my knee. What the heck, I'm half way in covered in mud and tired. I put my foot on the inside wall and in a giant heave ho in I go.
As I slide in, my head knocks everything off the night stand. Ouch my tummy is stuck. No, no I tell Leo, here I come. My black foot on the white wall I drag myself toward my bed.
Success, I am in the house. Leo licks my face which usually I enjoy but it annoys me now, sort of. I lay on my bed with muddy jeans and feet. No time to rest, I have to get the ladder back into the garage. This time I make sure the front door and I have a way back in. My weird sense of humor makes me sing, finishing the song. "Somewhere over the rainbow blue birds fly. Birds fly over the rainbow, why then oh why can't I? If happy little blue birds fly beyond the rainbow why oh why can't I?"
Now isn't that
absurd? Maybe it fits but it reminds me that I have a whole lot of mud to clean up. Moms favorite song, moms beautiful white house, it does sort of fit.
Cleaning up the mud takes me about an hour. My head hurts from bumping it. My knee stings where I cut it and various bruised and scrapes are starting to show up.
Looking at the clock I see it is now 2 am. Leo, ever patient Leo is still waiting for his romp on the grass, so out we go. I can always shower later, at least I washed my feet.
The outside romp makes me feel slightly ill and my vision is starting to blur just a bit. Leo and I go inside and right to bed. Tomorrow is soon enough to pick up the outside
doggie poop and see how badly I am hurt.
As I look back now I wish someone had a camcorder both inside and out. Americas Funniest Videos would have had nothing better than this one.
So this is my Midnight Adventure. Two and a half weeks later I still have the bruises and a healing cut on my knee. To top off the adventure, yep I locked every door and put the safety boards in the windows. 'My moms reaction was "Thank goodness you weren't hurt worse". I love you mom!!!
